Important Reminders…
- Be sure to select the correct grading period
- KNOW or LOOK UP the student’s Special Programs (SPED, 504, LEP, At-Risk). If these are not right the forms will NOT automatically go to the correct people and they will be hounding you to complete another one for them. If you do the special programs correctly you will only fill out the failure documentation one time. The spreadsheet will do the rest for you.
- These are all in SKYWARD -5-=504 -S-=SPED -R-=At-Risk -L-=LEP
- Almost all questions are either a Dropdown selection or Checkbox selection.
- If you notice two students with the same name in the dropdown list check the ID number to select the correct one.
- Things you have tried/done to help prevent the failure
- Parent you contacted (mom, dad, grandparent, etc…know who you contacted)
- Date/dates you made contact (one of the few you must type in the information)
- How you contacted parent/guardian (in person, by phone, written (includes emailing)
- Results (left message, spoke to parent, no response)
Grading : The VMS Way
Daily Grades - 50% - Minimum of 5 grades
Formative Assessment - 30% - Minimum of 3 grades
9 Week Test - 20% - Minimum of 2 grades - (at least one grade in this category at Progress Report)

Additional Notes:
- Progress reports will be sent through Skyward at the end of each 3 weeks - Minimum of 3 grades per 3 weeks
- Minimum of 12 grades per grading period.
- Grades should be updated in Skyward weekly.
- Late work must be accepted, with or without penalty at teacher discretion.
- Students may be given a reasonable opportunity to make up or redo a class assignment or test.
- DCP’s - If 50% of your students fail the DCP, an adjustment must be made.
- Examples: curving, disregarding questions, different weighted category, etc
- A student should not fail the six weeks due to a DCP grade.
Documentation of Failures:
- Failure documentation form must be submitted for all students who fail the grading period.
- Failure documentation process requires:
- Documentation of interventions
- Examples may include: mandatory tutoring, academic conference with student, and student contract,
- Documentation of parent contact
- A minimum of two parent contacts.
- The progress report and report card do not meet notice requirements.
- Contacts must be made in a timely manner to allow for a reasonable opportunity to improve grades.
- Documentation of interventions
- Teachers with a grading period and/or semester failure rate of greater than 20% will be required to develop and submit a student instruction support plan to Smith
Citizenship Grades
- Citizenship grades should be reflective of student behavior and conduct in the classroom throughout the six weeks.
- Changes in citizenship grades require documentation.
- Citizenship grades of C or below require parent contact regarding behavioral concerns and documentation.
